Establishment of the United Nations (24 October 1948)

Causes

The UN was set up 'to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war and to reaffirm human rights'
Many nations wanted an increase in international co-operation to achieve peace

Effects

The USSR was weary of the UN because the USA and its allies had a four to one majority in the security council

Overall summary

The UN differs from the League of Nations because the UN has the right to use armed force. 51 countries signed the charter for the UN in 1945
