Advantages
- The resolution is 0.2nm (1000x more than the light microscope).
- This means the electron microscope can be used to produce detailed images of the structures (organelles) inside cells.
- The Scanning electron microscope (SEM) produces 3D images that can reveal the detail of contours and cellular tissue arrangements (THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE USING A LIGHT MICROSCOPE).

Disadvantages
- Electron beams are defected by the molecules in air, so samples have to be placed in a vacuum.
- Electron microscopes are extremely expensive items.
- Preparing samples and using an electron microscope both require a high degree of skill and training.
