Effects of generating electricity

Advantages

  • Fossil Fuels do not occupy large land areas.
  • Nuclear Fuels do not produce greenhouse gases.
  • Hydroelectricity is renewable.
  • Biomass is renewable and reduces need for landfill sites.
  • Wind power is renewable and does not produce polluting gases.
  • Tidal power is renewable and does not produce polluting gases.
  • Geothermal is renewable.
  • Solar is renewable and does not produce polluting gases.

Disadvantages

  • Fossil Fuels produce polluting gases and solid waste.
  • Nuclear Fuels create radioactive waves that must be safely stored.
  • Hydroelectricity causes large scale flooding and produces greenhouse gases.
  • Biomass produces greenhouse gases.
  • Wind power can affect wildlife and must be sited in windy areas.
  • Tidal power causes large scale flooding and changes water flow.
  • Geothermal can release toxic gases from below the Earth's surface.
  • Solar causes large scale use involves large land areas and can affect wildlife.
