Did Unemployment and the economy improve as a result of the New Deal?

Advantages

  • Created millions of jobs
  • Stabillised the banking system
  • Cut the number of business failures
  • Projects like the TVA brought work and an improved standard of living to deprived areas
  • Projects provided valuable resources like schools, roads and power stations

Disadvantages

  • Never solved the underlying economic problems
  • The US economy took longer to recover than most European countries
  • Confidence remained low - throughout the 1930s Americans only spent and invested about 75% of what they had in 1929
  • When FDR cut the New Deal budget in 1937, the country went back into recession
  • 6 Million unemployed - 1941
  • Only entry to WWII ended unemployment

Evaluation

While it created jobs and solved a lot of the immediate problems, the long term economic problems weren't properly addressed.

Good example of how to use a table plan for a popular exam question - 'How successful was the New Deal?' To improve it you could add the aims of the New Deals as an introduction and split them up into achievements of the first and second New Deals.
