Designer babies

AdvantagesGetting Started

  • They are morally acceptable when it comes to ensuring babies are healthy. If a parent has a hereditary degenerative condition then it seems kind and loving to make sure that isn't passed on
  • If a couple gave birth to one child after another who will die at an early age is appalling. This technique enables children to be bornn to fulfil their potential and will bring joy to parents.

Disadvantages

  • Encourage the thought of a right to have children, letting the wanted embryos grow and destroying those not needed. Christians believe that all life is sacred and should never be destroyed
  • there is a risk that the test itself could damage the foetus and harm an otherwise human being
  • Shows an unhealthy search for the 'perfect child'. All new life should be accepted and loved in all forms
  • The disabled community may become devalued and there would be a desire to prevent disabilities. It is important that all people are welcomed into society
  • Only the rich can afford it so it creates a divide in society and increase prejudice
  • Children aren't a right and can't be purchased, they are a blessing and a gift from God.

Evaluation

The majority of Christians are totally opposed to designer babies because of the slippery slope argument. Many embryos are discarded or destroyed because they carry a defective gene, going against the commandment ' thou shalt not murder'.
