Advantages
- the control of extraneous variables means it is easier to identify cause and effect
- Experiments are controlled and standardised so the can be replicated by other researches
- Experiments are objective because procedures are set up so that biases from the researcher are not present

Disadvantages
- the setting can be very artificial and the tasks unrealistic meaning there can be a lack of ecological validity
- participants usually know they are in an experiment and this could affect their behaviour
