China's One child policy

Advantages

  • Rewards for those that followed the OCP; high wages, better schools &employment
  • 400million fewer people born
  • Standard of living increased
  • population growth slowed= more food and jobs for population
  • industries have lifted many out of poverty

Disadvantages

  • Hard to patrol in rural areas
  • Society preferred sons rather than daughters = girls abandoned in orphanages or left to die.
  • Women forced to have abortions of second child up to 9 months
  • Private lives were controlled by officers
  • If family had second child, they were fined with no benefits to life
  • Single child = spoilt child
  • Distorted gender balance - 60 million more men than women

Evaluation

Short-term the OCP was beneficial as the population decreased rapidly. This reduced pressures on China's resources which meant standard of living improved greatly. However, long-term the OCP has left china with an ageing population, with a large dependency ratio. This will cause various other pressures on industries in the near future.
