Causes of The 1917 Russian Revolution

Causes

  • The Economy

Effects

  • The government wanted to industrialize Russia and modernize with he rest of the world.
  • This meant the government had to train more people to use machinery and how to read and write so that Russia could have a larger work force.
  • The Factories were nearer the cities, so workers had to move across the country to get to big industrial cities like St Petersburg or Moscow
  • The middle class increased through the industrialisation, so there were more educated people who wanted a say in the political system.
  • Witte's economic policy was seen as a part of the problem with the economy. It aimed on investing in Russia's industry by buying from other countries, taking loans from other countries and increased taxes.
  • Worker's wages were low and grain was being requisitioned off the peasants, they could not afford goods produced and new workers lost their jobs.
  • To distract the workers and peasants from the economy the Tsar started a war with Japan in 1904. Russia expected the war to be an easy victory because the Japanese army was a lot smaller. However it only increased the problems with the economy. There were more shortages of goods and prices rose.

Overall summary

The economy led to dissatisfaction with the government and put peasants in a worse position than they were before industrialisation. The economy made the Tsar seemed unorganised and uncaring towards his people, he seemed to be impulsive and arrogant in his approach to different economic, political and social problems
