EvaluationThe Brown v. Topeka case was seenly as a success for the NAACP. They achieved their aim of desegregating schools. However, there was no set date in which desegregation should happen. Schools took advantage of this and they did not desegregate for a long time. As a result of the decision, the White Citizens Council was formed to defend segregation. By 1956, there were 1/4 of a million members. As a result, there was backlash against the NAACP. For example, in Alabama the group was outlawed. Despite this, it was good for the morale of the coloured people in the southern states, it showed that they had support at federal level and it also showed the there tactic of legal processes could be successful. |
