Augustinian type theodicies

Advantages

  • Evil as a consequence of sin
  • Evil as a privation
  • Cross overcomes evil
  • The fall of human beings
  • Because God is good does not mean his goodness is the same as ours
  • God has purpose for evil unknown to us
  • Comforts people to know Jesus died for their sins offers hope

Disadvantages

  • Evolutionary argument
  • Genetics argument
  • Scientific impossibility
  • Moral contradictions of omnibenevolent God
  • Logical contradiction of perfect creation susceptible to change

Evaluation

Despite the appeal they may have previously had Augustinian type theodicies lack the scientific and historical credibility to be truly relevant in the 21st century. Fails as a way of defending God of CT as there are many contradictions which undermine its validity as an attempt to defend the existence of God.
