Development (Growth & change)

Other information

  • Briony = There is no development. She would like to think and to convince the reader that she atones but she does not learn from her 'mistake' and continues to do anything but atone
  • Cecilia = Went from a lonely girl to a girl in love. However, this is ripped from her due to Briony's meddling
  • Robbie = Shy, to being presented to being over confidant in Briony's story.
  • Lola = Went from a confidant young woman to a victimised woman who "married her ******" and became wealthy and successful off of Paul Marshall's "Ammo Bar" profits
  • Paul Marshall = Appears harmless but is actually very harmful
  • Briony = The extent of her OCD drives her to control the lives around her. She writes a book to atone for her sins and to get her sister to forgive her even though Cecilia is dead
  • Cecilia =  Punished for allowing Robbie to further transgress the boundaries of the social classes. Dies tragically provides lack of justice
  • Robbie = Tragically killed by McEwan in France, just before he got to Dunkirk. Possibly punished for transgressing the class boundaries to be with Cecilia providing a lack of justice
  • Lola = Lives as long as Briony and Paul Marshall, lack of justice for her
  • Paul Marshall = Never punished for his crimes, an indictment of the society he lives in
