ALFIERI REVISION GUIDE

?

THEMES

CONTEXT

  • LAW AND JUSTICE: Alfieri begins by stating that even ancient lawyers had failed to prevent a "complaint" from "running its bloody course"
  • When people go against the law to assert justice there are bloody and violent consequences
  • Eddie and Marco's feelings dictate to them what they believes to be 'just'
  • ONLY GOD MAKES "JUSTICE"
  • LOYALTY
  • HONOUR/ COMMUNITY:
  • Alfieri tries to persuade Eddie to keep the immigratns hidden (illegal) than go to the Police which shows how- as an Italian immigrant himself- he respects the codes of honour upheld by Italians which also shows the clash between Italian and American society- "You wont have a friend in the world, Eddie!"
  • "In this neighborhood to meet a lawyer or a priest on the street is unlucky." •Sets up the prevalent views of the contemporary society, showing the moral and cultural standards presented amongst the Italian immigrant community. ➢ Distrust and wary feelings when facing law -> "suspicious little nod". • In a casual tone-> law exists now and is used more often, unlike ancient Sicily where justice was ignored "Justice is very important here." Foreshadows Eddie's death -"unlucky" associates with sense of danger.
  • "In Sicily, from where their fathers came, the law has not been a friendly idea since the Greeks were beaten." • Explaining the origin of this distrust mental quality towards law, that lay within the Italian immigrant community. ➢ Holds up cultural standard • Turning point: social context turning to historical context • THEME: LAW
  • "In those days, Al Capone, the greatest Carthaginian of all, was learning his trade on these pavements and Frankie Yale himself was cut precisely in half by a machine gun on the corner of Union Street, two blocks away."       • Showing how Italians only settle for the first half by using the example of Frankie Yale's death ➢ Evident that unjust was dealt by random solutions that mishandle the importance of law and justice in Italy history ➢ Builds up the main quote in the scene: ""Now we settle for half" • Foreshadows how Marco doesn't understand the true quality of law and its relation with justice -> - Page 73:  "The law? All the law is not in a book." "There is no law for that? Where is the law for that?" "This is not God, Marco. You hear? Only God makes justice."
  • "There were many here how were justly shot by unjust men" ➢Which already,at the start of the play starts up a basis that acknowledges the fact that the characters will misinterpret  the meaning of law and justice, when encountering them. ➢ Controlling the atmosphere and expectations of the audience.
