Aerobic & anaerobic respiration

Similarities

  • both produce energy
  • both use glucose
  • both types of respiration
  • both happen in the mitochondria

Differences

  • anaerobic: doesn't use oxygen
  • anaerobic: produces lactic acid
  • anaerobic: incomplete breakdown of glucose
  • anaerobic: created oxygen debt
  • aerobic: produces more energy
  • aerobic: produces carbon dioxide and water

Overall comparison

They both use glucose and are forms of respiration however, anaerobic respiration is used when there is a lack of oxygen. This creates an oxygen debt and means that the glucose is not broken down fully so there isn't as much energy released and lactic acid is produced (in humans).
