Advantages and disadvantages of Renewable Energy Resources

Advantages

  • Renewable energy resources never run out
  • Renewable energy resources do not add CO2 to the atmosphere
  • Hydroelectric power is clean and doesn't pollute the atmosphere
  • Tidal power is extremely reliable as the tide is constant twice a day
  • Wave power is reliable and has a huge potential in the UK because of its extensive coastline
  • Geothermal power uses earth's heat to generate electricity and heat buildings
  • Biofuels are produced from plant materials, and burning them emits no CO2- Biofuels are carbon neutral
  • We can use biofuels to power vehicles such as cars and buses

Disadvantages

  • Wind power is not reliable as it is not constantly windy
  • Solar power is not reliable on cloudy days
  • Hydroelectric power destroys habitats when dams are built and valleys are flooded
  • Hydroelectric power is only useful in countries with many rivers, so not suitable for the UK
  • Whilst reliable, Geothermal power is not used much in the UK
  • Almost all cars in the UK run on petrol or diesel which are fossil fuels and emit CO2
  • However if we use land to grow crops for fuels, it could push up the price of food

Evaluation

To evaluate, I think biofuels should be used more often as they don't pollute the earth and are easily accessible.
