Advantages and Disadvantages of FPTP system

Advantages

  • it is simple for the electorate to understand the voting process
  • quick- results of elections can be counted quickly (makes the transfer of power from on party to another quick and easy)
  • very little chance of extremist parties being elected to parliament under FPTP
  • accountability is enhanced

Disadvantages

  • the number of votes cast for a party in general elections is not accurately reflected in the number of seats won
  • smaller parties are unfairly treated under FPTP system
  • encourages tactical voting (voting for a party other than your preferred party purely to prevent a particular party from being elected)
  • emphasises & focuses on major parties
