-A referendum is a popular vote on a single issue, a form of direct democracy

-In the UK, the Parliament is sovereign and therefore refereundum results aren't binding

Why are they held?

Examples of UK referendums

1975- staying in the EU(voted yes)

2011- electoral reform, changing the FPTP voting system to the AV(voted no)

2016- staying in the EU(voted no)
