Advantages

  • more opportunities for employees to to excel while promotiong the bigger business visions
  • flexible/adapts quite easily to changes
  • quicker decisions due to faster communication
  • a more democratic style usually
  • higher motivation of employees to work harder since there are fewer positions in the higher levels

Disadvantages

  • for flat structures to function, leaders must share research and information
  • managers usually have a heavier workload than normal
  • confusion over roles since managerial workload is so heavy and lots of employees are reporting to one manager
  • employees often worry that other manipulate the system behind their back by reporting (wrongly) to the boss -> more employees are distrusting the higher levels
