    • method
      • All young healthy males deemed good mental wellbeing, middle class and privilege areas.
        • They volunteered and where randomly assigned roles, 10 guards 11 prisoners
          • took place in stranford university basement
          • The prisoners were unexpectedly arrested at home, stripped and taken fingerprints, given a uniform and number as to which they were referred to, dehumanise
            • guards wore uniforms and wore sunglasses to prevent eye contact, prisoners wore uniforms
    • Results
      • called off after 6 days
      • prisoners rebelled after 2 days
      • prisoners became apathetic and submissive to  guards, stopped standing up so avoid humiliation and punishment
        • guards became too brutal and prisoners were emotionally and mentally breaking down, they went on a hunger strike.

    • conclusion
      • their reactions may have been extreme since they were conforming to social stereotypes.
        • Each role requires different things, if you’re given a new role you change your behaviour to suit it
      • de individualisation explains behaviour of guards.
        • they became immersed in their roles and lost their sense of identity, acting sadistically
