Advantages

  • all participants signed consent forms
  • applicable in the real world

Disadvantages

  • gender bias
  • psychological harm: participants had to leave
  • ethical issues: informed consent-arrested outside homes
  • lab study: demand characteristics, people may act up to stereotypes

Evaluation

Haslam et al replicated the study in 2002 and found that the 'guards' were uncomfortable with exerting their power. This shows that since the 1970's when Zimbardo's study was conducted the way we view authority has changed.
