- Where do tropical storms occur?
- Tropical storms develop above sea water which is 27C or higher
- They happen in late summer and autumn
- When sea temperatures are highest
- Warm, moist air rises and condensation occurs
- This releases huge amounts of energy, which makes the storm more powerful
- They move west because of the easterly winds near the equator
- They lose strength when they move over land because the energy supply from the warm water is cut off
- Most tropical storms occur between 5C and 30C north and south of the equator
- The earths rotation deflects the path of the winds
- This causes the storm to spin
