  • Where do tropical storms occur?
    • Tropical storms develop above sea water which is 27C or higher
    • They happen in late summer and autumn
      • When sea temperatures are highest
    • Warm, moist air rises and condensation occurs
      • This releases huge amounts of energy, which makes the storm more powerful
    • They move west because of the easterly winds near the equator
    • They lose strength when they move over land because the energy supply from the warm water is cut off
    • Most tropical storms occur between 5C and 30C north and south of the equator
    • The earths rotation deflects the path of the winds
      • This causes the storm to spin
