- Weathering
- Definition
- weathering is the breaking down of the rocks, soil, and minerals through contact with the earth's atmosphere and biology.
- Mechanical weathering
- Freeze thaw
- If a rock, such as granite has cracks or joints.
- 1. when it rains, water goes into the cracks of rocks
- 2. if the temperature drops, the water will freeze in the cracks
- the cracks widen because of the ice (water expands when frozen)
- 3. when the temperature warms up, the ice melts and releases pressure on the rock
- 4. the process will keep happening and eventually parts of the rock will fall.
- Freeze thaw
- Biological weathering
- Can be caused from plants or animals.
- Tree roots can grow into the rock cracks - which widens the crack
- Animals can dig or burrow into the rock
- Chemical weathering
- Happens when rocks react to water or the air
- Chemical changes in the water or air can make rocks decay
