  • Watson and Rayner study
    • Aim
      • To see if an infant could be conditioned to become frightened of something they  previously had no fear of through classical conditioning
    • Procedure
      • 1 ppt
        • 11 month old infant
      • A loud noise was created when a metal bar was hit with a hammer causing the ppt to become distressed/afraid
        • Represented the unconditioned stimulus and response
      • Albert was presented with the rat and as he tried to stroke it  a metal bar was struck with a hammer and Albert became distressed
        • Repeated numerous times
      • Little albert was presented with a white rat and it was observed that he showed no fear of the animal
        • White rat represented the neutral stimulus
    • Results
      • After repeated pairings of the NS with the UCS which brought about the UCR it was observed that as soon as albert saw the rat white he became distressed/fearful
    • Conclusion
      • Albert had learned through classical conditioning to become frightened of something he was never previously afraid of
    • Evaluation
      • Psychological harm caused
        • Albert wasn't protected from harm
          • Didn't de-condition his fears
        • Didn't de-condition his fears
      • No informed consent given
      • Can't be sure conditioning caused the fear
      • Reliability
        • Only done on 1 ppt
      • Usefulness
        • Helps with the understanding of the development of fears

    • White rat represented the neutral stimulus
