  • Theories on the nuclear family.
    • Functionalism
      • MURDOCK- nuclear family is found universally.
        • CHESTER- family diversity is exaggerated and the nuclear family is still the most common family type. NEO-CONVENTIONAL families are still forms of the nuclear family
      • Nuclear family is the best family type. It is the most functional and a decline may lead to social issues.
    • Marxism
      • Nuclear family is not found universally, it only exists in capitalist societies that require inheritance and inequality.
      • ALTHUSSER- Family teaches children the norms of a capitalist society through their acceptance of the father that is dominant and in control. This ia bad as they DO NOT LEARN TO CHALLENGE CAPITALIST OPPRESSION.
    • New Right
      • Nuclear isn't found universally, though it should be. It is the most SELF RELIANT, FUNCTIONAL FAMILY FORM.
        • Nuclear family is the best family form, a breakdown would lead to serious social consequences. i.e. Children from broken homes are NINE TIMES MORE LIKELY TO BECOME YOUNG OFFENDERS.
      • Two reasons why people do not form nuclear families.
        • SELFISHNESS- Better access to welfare benefits MUURAY.
        • SURVIVAL- Individuals can only look after themselves.
    • Feminism
      • Nuclear family is not found universally, only in societies with patriarchal control
      • The family is oppressive and male dominated.
      • Gender roles mean that women have less freedom than men, as they earn less and spend more time doing domestic labour.
      • Children are socialized to accept gender roles.
    • Interactionism/Postmodernism
      • The nuclear family is not found universally. We live in a society where we can form any family type and choose to do so
      • It isn't the best family form as family types are too varied to be generalised. There is not just one family type good for society
