- 1. Personal data should be processed and kept fairly and lawfully
- You should be told about any data that is being collected and your permission should be gained.
- 2. Personal data can only be held for lawful purposes and specified reasons
- The Data Controller have to state why they are collecting and storing data - if its used for any other purposes they are breaking the law.
- 3. Personal data should be adequate, relevant and not excessive for the required purpose
- They should only collect data that they need and no more.
- 4. Personal data should be accurate and kept up to date
- Companies should do their best to not record wrong facts.
- 5. Personal data should not be kept for any longer than necessary.
- They should only keep data for a reasonable length of time.
- 6. Data must be processed in accordance with the rights of the data subject
- People have the right to inspect the information held on them, if incorrect they have the right to change it.
- 7. Appropriate security measures must be taken against unauthorised access
- Information has to be kept safe from hackers and people who no rights to see it. Dta must be safeguarded.
- 8. Personal data can't be transferred to countries outside the E.U. unless they have a similar legislation.
- If the company wants to share data ina nother country they must also must have similar Data Protection Laws in place.
