  • The New Right and Education
    • Reflects the ideas of Functionalism with regards to social solidarity and meritocracy
    • Education should NOT be about promoting equality (unlike Functionalists) but should instead be concerned with training the workforce
      • Should ensure the most able students are recruited into the most important jobs and others are prepared for lower level employment
        • Education doesn't currently achieve these goals because it is run by the state
    • Chubb and Moe- Marketization
      • Puts education in the hands of consumers
        • Supply
        • Demand
        • Competition
        • Choice
      • This will bring greater diversity, choice and efficiency to schools and increase their ability to meet everyone's needs
      • It should be run like a business
      • Schools should not automatically get funding from the state regardless of how well they perform
        • Instead, each family would be given a voucher to spend on buying education from a school of their choice
          • Forces schools to become more supportive of parents' wishes since the vouchers would be the main source of the school's income
            • Schools would have to compete for business, thus improving their product for their customers
    • Criticisms
      • The real cause of failure is not state control but social inequality and inadequate funding of state schools
      • Marxists argue that education does not impose a shared national culture- but imposes the culture of a dominant minority ruling class. It devalues the culture of the working class
