- The liberation thesis
- Put forward by Freda Adler (1975)
- As society becomes less patriarchal, women's crime rates become similar to men
- Changes in structure of society have led to changes in women's offending behaviour
- More opportunities for women, they have adopted traditional male roles in both legitimate (work) and illegitimate (crime)
- There is no longer traditional female crimes (prostitution or shoplifting) more violence and white collar crime
- EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THIS:
- Female offending rises during second half of the 20th century
- Adler - pattern of female crime has shifted - participating in 'male' crime
- Growth in 'gang girls' Denscombe (2001) teens wanted a tough and hard exterior
- CRITICISMS OF THIS:
- Female crime raised before the liberation movement in 1960(l.m)
- Most female crime committed by the W/C, the group least likely to be influenced by the liberation movement
- Chesney-Lind - link with prostitution made women branch out to male crimes
- Little evidence that the illegitimate opportunity structure has opened to women
- Adler over estimates the liberation and the ablitity to engage in crime
