        • many already had family members in the us
          • they went on to have success in banking, politics, and law
    • new immigrants began to arrive in the 1890's
    • from eastern europe and the meditteranian
    • many were poor, had little education skills and were fleeing persecution in their home country
    • found it difficult to find well paid jobs. lived in slums with people from their ethnic groups
