- Doesnt look at the quality of pleasure, just the quantity
- Uses a Hedonic calculus to calculate what action provides the most pleasure and least pain
- Duration, Intensity, Purity, Propinquity, Certainty, Richness and Extent
- Rule Utilitarianism
- John Stuart Mill
- Developed as an improvement on Jeremy Bentham's Act Utilitarianism.
- Focuses more on the quality of pleasure and not just the quantity.
- Better to be a man dissatisfied than a satisfied pig.
- Pleasures of the mind (education) = better than pleasures of the body (sex)
- Focuses more on the quality of pleasure and not just the quantity.
- Moral actions are those that follow rules that lead to the greatest good.
- Strong Rule means 'you must do y'
- Weak rule means 'you should do y'
