- Structure and adaptations of the leaf
- large surface area- to collect as much sunlight as possible
- arrangement of leaves- that minimises overlapping and avoids shadowing
- thin- most light is absorbed in the first few millimetres of the leaf- short diffusion distance
- transparent cuticle and epidermis- let light through to the photosynthetic mesophyll cells beneath
- long narrow upper mesophyll cells packed with chloroplasts- collect sunlight
- stomata- for gaseous exchange
- stomata that open and close in response to changes in light intensity
- air spaces in lower mesophyll layer to allow diffusion of co2 and 02
- xylem- brings water to the leaves
- phloem-carries sugars away
