  • Structure of the leaf- adaptations
    • Thin- short diffusion pathway, most light absorbed in first few micrometres
    • Leaves do not overlap so there are less shadows
    • Stomata that open and close in response to changes in light intensity
    • Transparent cuticle- lets light through to photosynthetic mesophyll cells
    • Xylem network brings waterto leaf cells, phloem carries away sugars from photosynthesis
    • Long narrow upper mesophyll cells packed with chloroplasts
    • Numerous stomata for gaseous exchange so all mesophyll cells are only a short diffusion pathway from one
    • Large surface area to absorb as much sunlight as possible
    • Many air spaces in lower mesophyll layer- rapid diffusion of gases
