- Structure of the leaf- adaptations
- Thin- short diffusion pathway, most light absorbed in first few micrometres
- Leaves do not overlap so there are less shadows
- Stomata that open and close in response to changes in light intensity
- Transparent cuticle- lets light through to photosynthetic mesophyll cells
- Xylem network brings waterto leaf cells, phloem carries away sugars from photosynthesis
- Long narrow upper mesophyll cells packed with chloroplasts
- Numerous stomata for gaseous exchange so all mesophyll cells are only a short diffusion pathway from one
- Large surface area to absorb as much sunlight as possible
- Many air spaces in lower mesophyll layer- rapid diffusion of gases
