  • Strain Theory
    • Where cannot achieve their goals throughout the legitimate methods therefore they turn to illegitimate methods.
    • Robert Merton
      • X - IGNORES NON UTILITARIAN CRIME AND GANG CRIME.
      • Argues that people are expected to pursue the AMERICAN DREAM
        • This is because it is said to be MERITOCRATIC where everyone has a chance based on ability and effort.
          • X - IMPLIES THAT EVERYONE HAS THE SAME GOAL OF THE AMERICAN DREAM.

    • Those who cant achieve their goals then suffer  STATUS FRUSTRATION which results in them turning to crime.
    • There are 5 responses to crime:
      • Conformity - Where individuals accept cultural approved goals
        • Ritualism - individuals become accustomed to legitimate means.
      • Innovation - where they accept goals but use illegitimate means to follow them.
      • Rebellion - where they reject goals and desire to bring in REVOLUTIONARY CHANGE
      • Retreatism - individuals reject illegitimate and legitimate means and become drop outs.
