- STM PETERSON & PETERSON
- Gave 24 participants (psychology students) meaningless three letter consonant syllables (TGH, CLS) and a three digit number.
- Participants were then asked to count backwards from their three digit numbers over 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 or 18 seconds.
- This was to prevent rehearsal
- The longer they had to count backwards, the less accurate their memory.
- 3 seconds – 80% could remember the three letters
- 6 seconds – 50% could remember
- 18 seconds – less than 10% could remember
