    • Gave 24 participants (psychology students) meaningless three letter consonant syllables (TGH, CLS) and a three digit number.
    • Participants were then asked to count backwards from their three digit numbers over 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 or 18 seconds.
      • This was to prevent rehearsal
    • The longer they had to count backwards, the less accurate their memory.
    • 3 seconds – 80% could remember the three letters
    • 6 seconds – 50% could remember
    • 18 seconds – less than 10% could remember
