- How successful were the first Five-Year Plan in achieving it's aims?
- REASONS OF FIRST FIVE-YEAR PLAN
- IDEOLOGICAL- socialism only possible in highly advanced industrialised nation. - behind advances in the West! ALSO revolution would serve working class - peasants prospered under NEP while workers didn't! REVERSE THIS by replacing 'bourgeois' with 'red specialists; - educated by COM PARTY
- POLITICAL - Stalin want to develop a reputation to surpass lenin. ALSO Germany unable to defend itself against capitalist nations in the event of war - coal, iron and steel necessity for modern warfare.
- ECONOMIC - introduced as a response to NEP's failure to industrialise Russia. - not producing results fast enough!
- SUCCESSES OF FIRST FIVE-YEAR PLAN
- INCREASE PRODUCTION - 14% ECONOMIC GROWTH - steel 4 mil in 1928 to nearly 6 mil in 1932
- URBAN POPULATION TREBLED. working class members promoted.- replace bourgeois speci with 150,00 newly trained red speci!!
- AIMS OF FIRST FIVE-YEAR PLAN
- 1) Develop heavy industries - coal, iron, steel, oil and heavy machinery - Stalin believe 'basic, decisive branches of industry' 2) - SEE OTHER BOX 3) lay foundation for rearmament for WAR
- 2) to focus on 1) attempt to lay foundation for future industrial development. majority of workforce unskilled (come from farm) poorly suit to production of complex consumer goods - working in heavy industry will help gain skills to work in industries of consumer goods!

- FAILURES OF FIRST FIVE-YEAR PLAN
- MEETING TARGETS - many official targets not met, officials not meeting targets faced consequences.. under pressure, they lie about amount produced to exceed targets - CONCERN ABOUT QUALITY OF WORK? - as of targets relating to quantity - the work produced was useless as of its low quality.
- LIVING/WORKING CONDITIONS - (never an aim of plan - argued not a failure) workers sustained to rations. consumer goods disappearing/queuing - 7 DAY WOKING WEEK - living conditions flop - labour discipline harsh - most workers were prisoners forced to work!
- ABOLIITiONOF FREE MARKET - main aims! wanted to replace with planned economy. PLAN FAILED to destroy it - did create the black market however, this was impossible to police - SO WIDESPREAD
- REASONS OF FIRST FIVE-YEAR PLAN
