  • Shanty Towns
    • A characteristic of LEDC cities, an area within them f unplanned poor quality housing which lacks basic services e.g clean water.
    • An informal settlements with poor infrastructure usually on the outskirts of a city
    • Shanty Towns are made from scrap materials such as mud and straw
    • Four other names for Shanty Towns are Slums, Bustees and Vevella
    • They are normally situated in abandoned land such as a railway track
    • People who live in them are normally from the countryside or people in financial trouble
    • People may be attracted to them as they are close to friends or because there is no rent or rates and because they are a low-cost housing
    • They are normally cramped or crowded conditions, poor quality housing (built of scrap materials), lack of amenities (no running water/sewage network/electricity/waste collection), open drains and poor hygiene as disease spreads very easily
