- Separation Techniques
- Immiscible/Miscible
- Some liquids will mix with each other- some won't
- Immiscible = substances that can't be mixed together e.g oil and water.
- Miscible= Substances that can mix together.
- Some liquids will mix with each other- some won't
- SEPARATING FUNNEL- SEPARATES IMMISCIBLE LIQUIDS
- when 2 IML are shaken together they will separate into separate layers the denser liquid sinks to the bottom- the less dense forms a layer on top.
- separating funnel with a tap will drain off the denser liquid. - oil-water are separated this way.
- when 2 IML are shaken together they will separate into separate layers the denser liquid sinks to the bottom- the less dense forms a layer on top.
- Fractional Distillation separates Miscible liquids
- Different liquids have different boiling points- so will condense at different temperatures
- we can use fractionally distill liquid air to get many products- e.g nitrogen/oxygen
- Different liquids have different boiling points- so will condense at different temperatures
