  • Separation Techniques
    • Immiscible/Miscible
      • Some liquids will mix with each other- some won't
        • Immiscible =  substances that can't be mixed together e.g oil and water.
      • Miscible= Substances that can mix together.
    • SEPARATING FUNNEL- SEPARATES IMMISCIBLE LIQUIDS
      • when 2 IML are shaken together they will separate into separate layers         the denser liquid sinks to the bottom- the less dense forms a layer on top.
        • separating funnel with a tap will drain off the denser liquid. - oil-water are separated this way.
    • Fractional Distillation separates Miscible liquids
      • Different liquids have different boiling points- so will condense at different temperatures
        • we can use fractionally distill liquid air to get many products- e.g nitrogen/oxygen
