- Asked 7 year olds and undergraduates
- Responses fell into 2 categories: social roles and personality traits
- Social role: Parts we are ascribed or have achieved (eg. daughter/ vet)
- Personality traits: What we think we are like (eg. confident)
- On average the 7 year olds wrote 5 social roles, and the undergraduates 10
- When we get older, we describe ourselves in terms of status
- This shows how we can distinguish between our different selves
