- Looks matter a lot in adolescence & early adulthood. Rely on others compliments and comments. SELF IMAGE!

- Family = most important relationship in someones self-concept.
- Breakdown of family can cause children and members to develop a low self-esteem
- Gender
- Gender roles and stereotypes can cause the individual to develop a negative self -image and esteem
- Ethnicity / culture
- Sense of belonging, so high self-esteem.
- Culture with strong expectations=measure lives against expectations
- May get a negative self-concept because they cant do certain things and can be separated due to it.

- Many people choose friends of the same class / marry those of the same class.
- Being rejected by people can cause someone to develop a negative self-concept (lower social class than others)
- Age
- Some can be happy / upset with the ageing process
- Infancy / childhood = dependent on family, adolescents = excited to become independent
- Reaching different life events = positive self=esteem
- Sexual orientation
- Society may not accept the individuals orientation, may develop a negative self-esteem.
