    • The Decline in the Importance of Religion

      • Decline in the proportion of the population going to or belonging to a church.
      • Increased age of the average church goer.
      • A decline in tradition Christian beliefs.
      • Fewer traditional weddings and baptisms.
      • Greater diversity in religions presence in Britain.
    • Church Attendance
      • In 2015, only 5% of the UK adult population attended church on Sundays.
      • Sunday school attendance has declined further, with only a few children now attending.
      • In 1971, 60% of weddings took place in a church. However, in 2012, only 30% of weddings were held at a Church.

      • In 2011, 59.3% of UK's population said that they were Christian. However, a decade later, this had dropped to 46.2%.
      • Non-religious believers had increased to 37.2%, whereas in 2011 there was only a quarter.
        • Woodhead -Could be atheist, could be agnostic, could be spiritual or could just not know.
      • In 2011 the population of Islamic beliefs were 4.9%. In 2021, this rose to 6.5%.
      • Demography
        • In 2011, 86% of England and Wales population identified as White. This decreased to 81.7% in 2021.
        • Next common ethnic group was Asian, Asian British and Asian Welsh - accounted for 9.3% of the overall population (increased from 4.2 million to 5.5 million).
        • Black, Black British, Black Welsh, African or Caribbean accounted for 4% of the population - increased from 1.9 million to 2.4 million.
    • Religion in the USA
      • Fairly religious nation but is also "ignorant about religion".
        • general ideology of living the "American Way".
        • Only 71% knew Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
        • Only 54% knew that the 'Koran' is the Islamic Holy book.
        • Only 45% knew that the Jewish Sabbath begins on Friday.
      • 1/2 of the USA population are Protestants and 1/4 are Catholics.
      • 60% of Americans said that they at least pray once a day outside of religious services - i.e. at a family gathering for dinner.
    • The Clergy
      • Individuals that are ordained for religious duties, especially in the Christian Church.
      • During the 20th century, this fell from 45,000 to 34,000.
      • An aging workforce - only 12% are under 40!
      • Woodhead (2014) - "there are no longer troupers left to keep the show on the road".
