  • Role of SENCO providing care and support for children with learning disabilities
    • Co-ordinate the day-to-day operation of the school's special educational needs policy with a view to ensuring the needs of children with learning disabilities are met
    • Co-ordinate SEN provision for children with special educational needs to ensure needs are addressed e.g. drawing up Individual Education Plans (IEPs), organising extra time in examinations, appropriate resources and carrying out testing e.g reading tests
    • Liaise with and advise teachers, checking that children have appropriate support. Also respond to any teacher requests for advice
    • Maintain a SEN register with records on pupils with learning disabilities and special educational needs, ensuring they are all updated and correctly maintained. Also conduct annual reviews to monitor and modify IEPs
    • Liaise with parents of children with learning disabilities and be a useful contact for any concerns they may have abut their child's development
    • Establish the SEN in-service training requirements of the staff and contributing as appropriate to their training
    • Liaise with external agencies regarding assessment and support e.g. educational psychology services, health and social services, and voluntary bodies
    • Developing the school's approach to SEN and ensuring Inclusion (moving to a social model of SEN, rather than the medical model)
    • Making referrals e.g. for testing by educational psychologists or to speech and language therapists
    • Managing learning support teachers and assistants so that children's needs are fully met
    • Liaising with an area SENCO for support and advice so that best care is given to the child with learning disabilities
    • Being available to meet with children with SEN to discuss concerns and act on them e.g. bullying or timetable reductions etc
    • Making sure the school has adequate resources to support SEN
