- Role of a Paediatrician providing care and support for children with learning disabilities
- Assess the child's needs using standardised assessments, create and share an agreed care plan with other health and social care professionals as well as parents and carers to help manage the child's condition
- Are involved with the prevention, early detection and management of other problems that affect children with learning disabilities including behavioural difficulties, developmental disorders, functional problems, social stresses and depression or anxiety disorders
- Provide pain relief e.g. Botulinium toxin injections, oral drugs and srugery (orthopadeic and neurosurgical) if necessary e.g. for a child who has cerebral palsy
- Help to provide person centred care, working closely with other professionals in a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT). Also provide clinical advice to social services, education sectors and other voluntary agencies
- Refer to specialist services such as speech therapy and make arrangements to monitor the child's progress. This is beneficial as they will be able to accurately assess the effectiveness of interventions that have been put in place and identify any further measures that should be taken
- Develop close links with other areas of medicine such as primary care e.g. GP practices, dental practices and community pharmacies to fully support a child with learning disabilities
- Provide co-ordinated care and support to parents such as information on their child's learning disability and resources that may be useful. Assist parents in their understanding of the child's learning disability by answering any questions they may have
