          • Living on benefits becomes a lifestyle as the state is too generous. Work breaks the cycle of crime, as they have more to lose when they offend

        • People only commit crime if the advantages of it outweigh the disadvantages

      • Where buildings are well mainlined, crime arises. None one cares for the area and so vandalism occurs
        • Where vandalism occurs, no one does anything, creating an 'anything goes' attitude
        • New York 2001 study- saw a dramatic fall in serious/ petty crime with a zero tolerance policing attitude
    • CLARKE
      • Target hardening
        • CCTV reduces crime, though it is argued that this just displaces crime
        • Laws should be strictly enforced with harsh punishments, as they will then not consider crime to be worth the risk
        • Streets should be kept clear of youths, sex workers, drug dealers and the homeless
    • CRITICISMS
      • Acknowledge the position of the victim
      • Ignores evidence of middle class crimes, they don't see this as a problem for society
      • More of a political viewpoint, rather than a sociological one
      • Aggressive policing has led to aggressive policing tactics, this is bad for society as they distrust the police
      • Strict policing has led to Britain's extremely overcrowded prsons
      • Zero-tolerance leads to the police targeting certain groups and discriminating
