              • Sex outside marriage is a sin, it goes against God's holy law and vows and in front of God.

            • Adultery is not just a physical but emotional act. Having sexual desire for someone who you are not married to is a sin.
      • Family Planning
        • Catholics believe that artificial contraception is sinful as you are preventing God's plan.
          • God's plan is to procreate which the use of contraception interferes with.
          • The Rhythm method is given as an alternative.
        • Anglicans and Protestants believe that sex is an important way to show love and affection in a marriage.
          • Sex is not strictly for procreation
          • The use of artificial contraception is permitted as it allows a couple to show love and regulate family size
          • Believe that it is unfair to bring up a child into a life of deprivation so should only have as many children as can be cared for.
        • Some Christians do not accept the morning after pill and coil as it does not protect human life
      • Nature and purpose of marriage
        • The nature of marriage is man and woman joined together.

          • to unite with someone for the rest of your life
          • procreation and growing the faith.
          • to be faithful and make a sacrament with God's ble**ing and in His presence
        • Marriage is a covenant before God.
        • Reflects the sacrificial love of Jesus
      • Same-sex marriage and cohabitation
        • Marriage is defined as being between a man and woman
        • Cohabitation
          • Some Christians believe that they do not need to get married to show love and cohabitation ** therefore acceptable
          • Members of the Church of England may cohabit if it leads to marriage as marriage is the best.
          • Orthodox Christians refuse to accept any recognition of sex before marriage.
          • Catholics do not accept cohabitation
      • Divorce
        • Divorce is not recognised in a Catholic Church
          • In the Roman Catholic Church, a marriage can only end when one partner dies or if there are grounds for an annulment.
        • Jesus taught that anyone who divorced and remarried was committing adultery
          • "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her" Mark 10:11

        • Purpose
          • to grow the faith and teach children love and forgivene**

            • Christians believe that children are a gift from God and they must respect their dignity.
          • "Husbands, love your wife, just as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her." Ephesians 5:25
            • Jesus loved the Church, his love should be an example to husbands. It shows the importance of a stable and loving family environment.
          • "Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old." Proverbs 23:22
            • Children should listen to their parent and respect them. It highlights the importance of the elderly.
        • Nature
          • nature of family has changed. It used to be an extended or nuclear family. Now there are many different family models.

        • Roles of men and women
          • Jesus and early Christians lived in a male-dominated society which is reflected in the Bible
            • "Wives, submit your husbands as to the Lord..." Ephesians 5:21-22
              • Shows the belief God made men and women differently and that men are supposed to be the head of the household.
            • However, the Bible states that men and women were both made in the image of God and should be treated equally.

          • Some Christians believe that they should follow the example of Jesus.
            • Jesus treated all women with respect and welcomed them as his followers
        • Gender Prejudice in Christianity
          • The Catholic Church is opposed to allowing women to be priests or ministers
          • Paul suggests in Timothy that church leadership roles should only go to men

          • Adultery is a serious sin.

        • Purpose
          • To provide the foundation for a stable family life
          • Best way for people to have a stable relationship and true sexual fulfilment
          • Completes half a man's deen (religious responsibility)

            • "There is no institution more beloved to Allah than marriage..." Hadith

        • Same-sex relationships
          • Islam forbids homosexual relationships of any kind.
            • Many Muslims are against changes made to the law concerning same-sex marriages
        • Co-habitation
          • Most Muslims are against cohabitation as they believe a sexual relationship should only take place within marriage
      • Family
        • Nature
          • Often an extended family because it is expected that children look after their parents when they get old.
            • Extended family means greater stability and support.
        • Purpose
          • The foundation of human society and provides a secure, healthy and nurturing environment.
          • Children learn more about the religion and what is halal and haram from their parents.
          • Parents are responsible in ensuring that they care for their children physically and emotionally.
          • "He who is good to his parents, ble**ing be upon him." Hadith
      • Divorce
        • Islam allows divorce as a last resort and encourages reconciliation.
          • Men and women are guaranteed the right to divorce in the Qur'an
        • Some see divorce as hateful to God.
        • Legally, a civil divorce must be done. Some Muslims choose to get a religious divorce.
          • A religious divorce must:
            • be declared to a man's wife verbally or in writing.
            • The couple must wait three months (iddan) without having sex but remain living together
              • Time allows couple to reconsider and see if the woman is pregnant
                • If the woman is pregnant, thee divorce can only be i**ued when the baby is born.
      • Human Rights
        • In Islam, men and women have complementary but equal roles.
          • Typically, a woman's role is in the home and she is expected to have children and fulfil her role as a mother.
          • A man's role is to work and protect and provide for his family
            • "Men are the protectors and maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others...the good women are therefore obedient." Qur'an 4:34
