    • Charles 1 and parliament  1625-29
      • believed in the divine right of monarchs
        • parliament would not grant him tonnage and poundage = mad
          • Had to call parliament more often
      • failed attack on Cadiz by Buckingham -talk of impeaching him
        • charles called parliament but then dissolved to to save him
          • Eventually assassinated 1628.                parliament was recalled -c dissolved it
      • forced loan to raise funds without parliment
        • 1628 war with France forced him to end this in an agreement with parliament
      • session of parliament ended due to complaints about Buckingham and took back the petition of rights -allowed to collect t+p without a grant
    • failure of personal rule
      • some belive it was an attempt to etablish an absolute mornachry
      • 1630 treaty of Madrid = reduced c's spending
      • He created new ways of collecting payments      -ship money and feudal payments - kept for navy but led to resentment
        • 1636 - John Hamption refused to pay ship money- trial took kings side
      • Supported Arminisim  by appointing Laud as arch bishop
        • Henrietta Maria - children practiced Catholicism
      • star courts sentenced 3 puritan writers to have their ears cut off- Laud ment business in GOV
    • Scottish troubles
      • presbyterian
        • 1636- c intos a book of canons= english practices         1637- eng book of prayer = disorder
          • Armies were raised but C had to rely on local milita -treaty of berwicj 1639
            • ENG tax payer = unhappy with war
              • SHORT parliment- 3 weeks -refused to grant money
                • defeated at Newburn= oct 1640 TREATY OF RIPON - £850 to scots whilst in newcastle
    • Failure to compromise
      • LONG parliament nov 1640.        -impeached wentworth and Laud.  -1641=. triennial act      APR-W+L put on trial-Cathlic plot to release them??
      • MPs + Pym- wanted presb churches + abolishment of star courts =crack in GOV
      • 10 Propositions drawn up -more power to parliament
        • Whilst C in Scot 1641- parliment rose army
        • Grand remonstrance- passed by 11 votes, + rumors of impeaching queen
          • C took 300 troops into commons + arrested 3 5 leading members
            • Jun- 19 propositions for negotiation - wanted peace?-no    both sides rose armies war= 1642
              • 1st Civil war
                • 1643- tax in parliamentary areas                1645-new model army -22,000 men led by fairfax + cromwell
                • APR 1646 C surrendered to the scots- laud executed
                  • presb church in scot to join C- took to long so went to parliament
                    • Newcastle proposal-1646 abolishment of bishops ect
