- Proteins
- Monomers: Amino Acids.
- 20 different amino acids. 8-10 are essential (must be obtained through diet) others can be synthesized in body.
- Plants use nitrates from soil to obtain amino group. Organic groups made in photosynthesis.
- Animals take in proteins in diet. Digested into amino acids which are built up into new proteins.
- Excess amino acids cannot be stored. Amino group makes them toxic. Deamination is process by which amino group is removed in liver. Converted into urea and removed in urine.
- A group of organic compounds whose molecules consist of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sometimes sulfur.
- Structure:
- Testing for Proteins: equal parts biuret reagent to protein. Lilac for positive test.
- Monomers: Amino Acids.
