The number of different proteins possible is huge, as there are several thousand ways of arranging three AMINO ACIDS, and each arrangement is a separate protein. Adding more AMINO ACIDS increases the number of possible proteins.

The order of the AMINO ACIDS in the protein determines the protein's structure, and the structure of the protein determines how the the protein will work.

What is the PRIMARY STRUCTURE of a protein?
The PRIMARY STRUCTURE is the order in which the AMINO ACIDS are arranged in the protein chain.

What is the SECONDARY STRUCTURE of a protein?
The SECONDARY STRUCTURE of a protein is when protein chains coil or fold up and are held in place with weak chemical hydrogen bonds. It is the coils and fold that make up the SECONDARY STRUCTURE of a protein.

What is the TERTIARY STRUCTURE of a protein?
The TERTIARY STRUCTURE of a protein is where the protein strands fold into a ball, which is held together by weak chemical hydrogen bonds AND stronger disulfide bonds. The TERTIARY STRUCTURE is not found in all proteins, but is found in ENZYMES.

What is a GLOBULAR protein?
A GLOBULAR protein is one which has a roughly spherical shape. (ENZYMES are GLOBULAR proteins.)
