        • voting for the presidential candidates at state level in early January - candidates will then withdraw in the run up to the NPC until there is only 1 candidate per party - basically when candidates make known that they wanna be Pres.
      • 4. ELECTION DAY AND ELECTORAL COLLEGE

        • party formally announces their nominee - 2016: Trump=Rep. Clinton=Dem.
      • 3. GENERAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN
        • nominees travel round states campaigning for election - $$$$ - swing and safe
    • Candidates must meet certain requirements:
      • natural born citizen of US
        • Trump questioned Obama's citizenship
      • at least 35
      • 14 years residency
      • Extra consitituional
        • political experience
          • Obama previously senator for honolulu. Clinton was secretary of state. Trump has none.
        • major party endorsement
        • personal characteristics (white? male? married?
        • ability to raise lots of money - or family money (Trump)
        • effective organisation (cannot use the parties organisational structure before they are the chosen candidate.
        • oratorical and telegenic
        • sound and relevant policies
  • OBAMA
