  • Practical Techniques
    • REFLUX
      • Liebig condenser
      • Vapours are recycled back into the reaction mixture
    • Purification of SOLIDS
      • 1.Hot solvent added to dissolve solid to form saturated solution
        • 2. Solution is let to cool so the solid crystallises
          • 3. Crystals are filtered under reduced pressure
            • 4. Washed with ice cold water
        • Temperature of the solvent is important
    • Purification of LIQUIDS
      • If product is insoluble in water then adding water can remove soluble impurities
        • Impurities then removed by separating filters
      • Has to be dried using anhydrous salts to remove any water that may remain
    • DISTILLATION
      • Separates substance in increasing boiling points
    • FILTERING
      • Buchner funnel: attached to a vacuum line flask
        • The vacuum line causes a suction which causes the liquid to pass
    • PURITY BASED ON MP AND BP
      • Impure solid have a lower MP and higher BP
      • Those that are pure have a small range of MP and BP
  • DISTILLATION
    • Separates substance in increasing boiling points
