- EMOTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS
- primary characteristic of phobias is fear that is excessive
- The fear is coupled with anxiety and panic
- The emotions are cued by the presence or anticipation of a specific object or situation (e.g. spiders) and are out of proportion to actual danger
- BEHAVIORAL CHARACTERISTICS
- Avoidance-something is fearful we try to avoid it.Can greatly effect a persons normal routine.
- Opposite response freeze or faint (fight or flight) freeze,fight or flight
- This differs from day to day fears as everyday fears don't effect everyday life.Also with phobias there is a marked distress.

- COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURS
- CB link to thought process e.g. irrational nature of a persons thinking and also a resistance against rational arguments.
- Another characteristic is their awareness of the fears being excessive (although possibly absent in children)
- Difference between phobia and delusional mental illness=awareness of these issues
- Phobic disorders are instances of irrational fears that produce a conscious avoidance of the feared object/situation.
- All phobias share the characteristic of extreme anxiety
