  • Personal Digital Devices
    • Use of digital devices
      • They allow people to communicate
        • Through messaging, voice calls, social media etc
      • Devices are made for leisure
        • Playing games, taking photos, listening to music
      • Travel
        • People use devices on the move, for sat navigation and global positioning, geotagging images
    • Using digital devices
      • Audience and purpose
        • They have to think about who is using the device (audience)
          • A teenager might want internet access for social networking sites
        • How are they using the device (purpose)
      • Wants and needs
        • Important to think about the user requirements
          • I want a faster processor, I need something small and easy to carry
      • Factors to consider
        • Cost, compatibility, storage, purpose, security
    • Common features
      • Processor
        • Processor in all devices, it controls the functions
      • Internal memory
        • needs to store the program instructions and data in its internal memory
      • 1 Kilobyte (KB) =1000 Bytes
        • 1 Megabyte (MB) = 1000 kilobytes
          • 1 Gigabyte (GB) = 1000 megabytes
            • 1 Terabyte (TB) = 1000 gigabytes
      • Flash memory
        • Peripheral that is ideal for portable devices
        • It doesn't lose data when turned off
        • Has no moving parts so it doesn't damage easily (SSD)
        • Removable, used to transfer data
        • Types: SD card, USB, SDHC (high capacity card)
    • Input and output devices
      • Three types of peripherals: storage devices, input devices and output devices
      • Input devices: mouse, keyboard, webcam, microphone etc
      • Output devices: speakers, headphones, printer, screen etc
    • Connectivity
      • Data cable connection
        • most common is the USB cable
      • Bluetooth
        • Connect wirelessly, communicate over short distances
      • Wi-Fi
        • Another wireless method, over long distances
      • Synchronising
        • automatically exchange data
        • Cloud synchronisation
          • on a remote sever, automatically downloaded all your files onto all devices
    • Mobile phone 1
      • Core functions
        • allow people to communicate over voice calls
        • using short messages (SMS)
      • Added functions
        • multifunctional devices, phones can perform functions on laptops, game consoles, this is called convergence
      • Functions: camera, internet browsing, entertainmentetc
    • Mobile phone 2
      • Digital rights management (DRM)
        • DRM software to prevent you from making copies to audio and video files, protects the copyright owner
      • Connectivity
        • Wi-Fi, bluetooth, infrared, HDMI port and USB port
      • Download and streaming
        • Most users download, if they are connected to wi-fi, they can stream media
          • Advantages
            • Saves time, uses less storage space
          • Disadvantages
            • Cannot keep a  local copy, limited availablitiy for streaming, user experience is connection dependent
    • Game consoles 1
      • Peripherals
        • Wireless controllers, wireless headsets, hard drive transfer cable, webcam, motion sensors, high definition
      • Features: connectivity, online multiplayer, CD/Blu-ray
      • Current developments:smart TV and smartphones and tablets
    • Game consoles 2
      • Overuse injuries, causes: RSI, prevention: time limits, breaks, using a different controller
      • Obesity, causes: the amount of time spent on the compeer is linked with obesity, prevention: time limits, physical acitivies
      • Muscle and joint problems, causes: impacts on posture and spine, prevention: breaks, adjust furniture to suit height, ergonomic chair if possible
      • Eye strain, causes: becomes fatigued, blurry vision and headaches, prevention: adjust screen for contrast and brightness, look at other things and take breaks
      • Effects on behaviour
        • Violent games causes aggression
