- HTTP
- Stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
- Used by web browsers to ACCESS websites
- Web browsers use to COMMUNICATE with web servers
- HTTPS
- Stands for HTTP Secure
- More secure version of HTTP.
- Encrypts ALL information SENT and RECEIVED
- FTP
- Stands for FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL
- Used to access, edit and move files between devices on a network
- EG: To access files on a server from a client computer
- POP3
- Stands for Post Office Protocol 3
- Used to retrieve emails from a server
- The server holds the email until you download it, then it is deleted from the server
- IMAP
- Stands for Internet Message Access Protocol
- Similar it POP3, used to retrieve emails from a server
- The server holds the email until you delete it.
- Used by most web based email clients
- SMTP
- Stands for Simple Mail Transfer
- Used to send emails
- Used to transfer emails between servers
- TCP/IP
- The protocol which dictates HOW data is sent between networks
- Stands for Transmission Control Protocol
- Sets the rules for how devices connect to the network.
- IP (Internet Protocol) is responsbile for packet switching
